A European project
European Spallation Source is a joint European project, like that of many large-scale research facilities such as CERN in Geneva. The European countries that are interested in building and operating ESS are forming a coalition and entering into a formal agreement with one of the countries that has offered to be host. Consequently, ESS is not an EU project.

European Spallation Source ESS AB has started to recruit the staff, primarily scientists and engineers who will help to design, construct and commission one of the world’s leading neutron source laboratories. We are searching for committed, enthusiastic and energetic individuals, either youthful or young-at-heart, of all nationalities, to join us in the exciting and challenging adventure of building the European Spallation Source.

Income & Taxation
Compensation management
Salary levels at ESS are at internationally competitive levels.  In Sweden, income after taxation and mandatory expenses are comparable to most other European countries. Many services that in other countries are paid by private individuals are in Sweden financed collectively via the tax bill or by the employer. Therefore, residents in Sweden benefit from high quality social insurance and societal services at no or very low cost to the individual.  In order to understand this detailed balance the candidate is introduced to the Swedish tax and pension/insurance system during the second visit to Lund and ESS.

Opportunity for expert tax relief
The Swedish government has also introduced the possibility to apply for reduced income tax for non-Swedish scientists, under the so-called “expert tax” relief. ESS offers more information on this possibility within the recruitment process

Living and Working in Sweden

Relocation and Family Support

Relocation services

One of the most important things when moving to a new country is to consider the whole family.  ESS offers a relocation package including practical as well as financial support, help with finding a suitable home and schools for the children as well as installation and relocation allowances. The Relocation services are managed by an external relocation agency working close to ESS.
Support for families and partners

Language courses and relocation training
All international employees and partners are offered the opportunity to take a beginners’ course in Swedish. The employee is also offered the opportunity to meet a consultant especially skilled in the field of relocation training. The aim is to teach the family about the cultural characteristics of Sweden as well as reflecting upon their own cultural identity and how these will influence their intercultural interactions.

Partner support
HR has initiated “get-togethers” for employees’ partners to ensure that ESS helps to integrate the partner and to get them introduced to a social network. The partner is also, via the Swedish Public Employment Service, given the opportunity to meet a job coach who will assist in finding employment and who will provide information about the Swedish job market or about universities in Sweden if further education is preferred. ESS has a wide network in relevant sectors that will provide useful support in finding employment for partners.

Support in finding appropriate schools for children
The relocation agency will work hard to help find the appropriate school for employees’ children. In Lund there are several excellent schools.  A pre-analysis will help the employee and family to find the most suitable alternative.
